Poker Odds Fundamentals
What's the best poker strategy that would help our hand play improve as the game develops? There are many poker tactics for improving our winning odds but the most important is probably that which helps us calculate our poker odds.
A winning poker strategy is mostly knowing our probabilities in a hand. For instance, what are our poker odds when holding an AQ? Beginners will just play this hand - or any hand for that matter - anyway they wish. That's when they lose a lot of money. Poker odds help us see whether a hand is playable or foldable.
Poker odds calculation is especially helpful when we're trying to figure out how our hand is benefited by the flop. For instance, we have a suited QJ clubs and the flop has A diamond, and 8 and 7 hearts. The hand is not benefited by the board. No poker odds of turning the hand into a winning combination. With this situation, most players would check and fold - or bluff.
For instance, some players would dare bet with QJ even if the flop doesn't help them. They pretend to have the flop helping them by the bet. It may make opponents think that they are ready for a strong draw so that some opponents may fold at the thought.
If we have an AK spade and the board has Kd, Jh, and 4s, our poker odds are improved greatly by the flop and we have a strong hand to bet or raise on. There's a top pair of K or a spade flush. If the flop comes 4 and 6 spade plus a J diamond, we have a potential strong hand at the turn or river with a draw. This improves our poker odds of winning so we bet or raise. A spade at the turn gives us poker odds of having a flush draw while an ace or a king a top pair.
With draws, we need our pot odds and outs. Outs are how many cards will improve our hand. With QJ spade and a flop of Kd, 10h, and 7 club, our outs are 4 aces and 4 nines - a total of 8 outs. Our poker odds for a draw are 8 times 2 plus 1, or a 17 percent possibility. We multiply this with the pot and the bet amount to see our maximum amount we can call. If the bet is $10 and the pot $90 the maximum is $100.
Hence, such is how we calculate our poker odds. Poker odds help to see how our hands can be improved.
