What Makes a Good Poker Player?
Do you want to be a good poker player? Then, read on.
Being a good poker player does not start and end with winning poker games. There is a lot more to being a good poker player than you know. It also entails proper attitude, the right outlook and management of time and money.
Although it seems that you could fool everybody else by talking trash at the poker table, you should know that people find this to be a very unattractive trait in a poker player. Remember the saying "an empty barrel makes noise"? It also holds true in poker world. Nobody wants to listen to you bragging all night long, trying to distract your opponents with your supposed greatness. If you want to let others know that you are a good poker player, then prove it at the poker table by winning, not talking.
A good poker player not only knows how to win but more importantly, knows how to lose. Humbly accepting a defeat is a tough skill to master, not only in poker, but in many other games as well. If an opponent beats you fair and square, submit to his powers for now. You can still improve yourself and beat him another day. It is through losing that a poker player learns how to value his or her money more, learns that he or she should hone his poker skills more before fighting again. A lot of values can be learned from losing, the amount of which may prove to be far greater than the money you would have won.
A good poker player earns the respect of other poker players not only by winning but also how he or she behaves at the poker table. A poker player who acts before his turn, who slams the chips, and who gives out unnecessary comments during play, is considered either rude or ignorant. If you do not want to be labeled as such, then act your best at the poker table. People love to play with polite and proper poker players. Be otherwise, and you will be left with no one to play with.
Poker has its set of values and behaviors to be followed by the players. Poker is not an uncivilized game, as those against poker would like to see it. Poker is played using your higher intellects, thus it should also be played with higher manners. Poker should not be played in a barbaric way, if you want to be a good poker player.
